Antique Ayurveda Organic Sabja Seeds
Product Description

Antique Ayurveda Organic Sabja Seeds are sourced from certified organic sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) farms and naturally processed to preserve their distinctive swelling property and mild flavour. Sabja seeds — also called tukmaria, falooda seeds, or sweet basil seeds — are small black seeds that swell to 10–15 times their original size when soaked in water, forming a natural translucent gel around each seed.

This gel-forming property makes sabja a popular addition to Indian summer drinks, sherbets, falooda, rose milk, and lemonades. The soaked seeds have a mild, almost neutral flavour and a pleasant, slightly chewy texture that is different from the seeds themselves.

Sabja seeds are not the same as chia seeds — though they look similar dry, sabja seeds swell much faster (within 5–10 minutes of soaking versus chia's 15–30 minutes) and have a more pronounced gel coating. They are a traditional ingredient in Indian summer beverages and have been consumed in South Asia for centuries.

Our sabja is NPOP certified organic — grown without synthetic pesticides — and packed without preservatives or additives.

As Per Ayurveda

Sabja seeds (Tulsi beeja in some classical references) are classified in Ayurveda as Sheeta virya (cooling in potency) and are particularly valued during summer months for their ability to reduce internal body heat. They are associated with Pitta-pacifying properties and are traditionally used in cooling beverages alongside rose water and sandalwood preparations. Their natural mucilaginous quality when soaked is understood to be soothing to the digestive tract lining in Ayurvedic practice.

FAQ
Q: How do I use sabja seeds?

A: Rinse the seeds briefly, then soak in water for 5–10 minutes — they will swell rapidly and form a clear gel coating. Use the soaked seeds in cold drinks, falooda, lemonade, rose sherbet. The gel-coated seeds add a pleasant texture and visual appeal to beverages.

Q: What is the difference between sabja seeds and chia seeds?

A: Both form a gel when soaked, but they are different plants. Sabja (sweet basil seeds) swell much faster — within 5–10 minutes — and form a more pronounced, defined gel coating. Chia seeds take 15–30 minutes to fully hydrate. Chia seeds also have a slightly nuttier flavour. Sabja have been used in Indian beverages for centuries; chia is a South American seed.

Q: Can I add sabja seeds to hot beverages?

A: Sabja seeds are traditionally used in cold or room-temperature drinks — heat destroys the gel structure and reduces their characteristic texture. For best results, soak in cool or room-temperature water and add to chilled beverages.

Q: How many sabja seeds should I use per drink?

A: Typically 1–2 teaspoons (5–8g) per serving is sufficient. After soaking, the seeds expand significantly — even a small quantity produces a substantial volume of gel-coated seeds. Start with a smaller amount and adjust to your texture preference.
